I awoke to find...

One of my main goals in life is to try to become more awake and aware of life itself. As a human being, I'm fully aware of the fact that I can only see in a small band of light; I can only hear in a very small range of sounds; and that reality exists within my perception and outside of my perception. My goal is to become more and more aware of what I don't see and hear and taste.

I've found the more clear I am with myself, the clearer I am with people. Every once and a while, I get a real glimpse of the whole of someone - good and bad, frightened and brave, hard and soft, smart and stupid. It's a wonderful experience, especially when the person is a child or a teenager.

I can't think of anything worse than missing all of the world to focus on something on my cell phone. I see people walking down the street, even driving (which is terrifying), with their entire attention focused on some little box in their hand. Rather than experience the day, the sunlight, the trees and birds, many people walk their dogs with their phones in their ears and their eyes on the little box.

To me, that's  like a horror show.

And let's face it, I awoke this morning to see that half the world was asleep. Damn you Australia!

No seriously, it's not up to me to tell other people to wake up to their lives. I'm not the enlightenment police. Even if I was placed on this earth to awake people, the very fact that I believe I'm on this earth to awaken people is a kind of dream in and of itself.

Am I awake? Or am I dreaming that I'm awake? Personally, I think both are happening at the same moment. I don't believe our feeble human mind is capable of holding awake for any length of time. It's a process - awake, asleep, awake, asleep - we vibrate back and forth between the two phases.

So I'm all right if the rest of the world is still asleep. My job is to attempt to extend my own awake periods and diminish my own sleep periods.

And then there's this::

"I thought it would be nice

to lie down and close my eyes

It never occurred to me

that I am already asleep" (Enigma by Trapt)

Yeah.
