Thursday Thirteen – Art Candy

I’ve recently become a bit addicted to Vulture, the entertainment column of the New York Times.

Ok, together now: “You’re suck a geek!” Feel better?

One of my favorite features is the daily art column called Art Candy. The last week has been so funny that I just had to share some of my favorites. A big high five to Rachel Wolff, the reporter for this column. She’s funny.

Thursday Thirteen #19 - My favorite Art Candy

1. This is the last year Julie Rofman will serve on the Prom Committee. (3/4/08)

Julie Rofman

Left Over by Julie Rofman

I have no idea what this is – it looks like the top of a high school gym but who really knows?

2. Use For That Excess Skin You Have Lying Around (3/3/08)

Skin doll

Epidermis Interactive Pet by Stuart Karten Design

“These grotesque, wrinkly balls of flesh (they’re made of engineered human tissue) come fully customized ? your four-legged creature can be tanned, tattooed, or pierced to your desired specifications”

Ew!

3. Hanging out with some dudes. (2/29/08)

Brian Finke

Untitled (Frat Boys #1 and #3)

I have a D.P. who says that his frat days were the “best days of his life”.

Yeah. Now I know why….

4. The world’s laziest swimmer. (2/22/08)

world?s laziest swimmer

Joel Meyerowitz’s Elements Air:Water

5. Much fabled ugly tree. (2/11/08)

Dead Tree by Frank Webster

Frank Webster’s Dead Tree

I guess the orange is supposed to reflect the dawn of spring but really, don’t you think it’s the burning apocalypse that killed the tree and every other living thing in this painting.

6. Manhattan at noon? (2/7/08)

Gus Powell?s Putti

Gus Powell’s Putti

“Though it?s always good to have confidence in your work, this shot ? part of Gus Powell?s ?Manhattan Noon? show currently up at the Museum of the City of New York ? makes us a little uneasy.”

And this is art??

7. I shot the Sheriff (10/10/07)

Ralph Steadman and Hunter S. Thompson The Sheriff

Ralph Steadman & Hunter S. Thompson’s The Sheriff (1995)

Given the fact that Thompson shot himself in the head ten years after it was made, this painting is a little prophetic. Wouldn’t you say?

8. Picasso revisited. (12/18/07)

Julien Friedler

Julien Friedler’s Les Demoiselles d?Avignon

“Uptown gallery Francis M. Naumann asked a crop of contemporary artists to submit their take on Picasso?s beastly whores. ?The Demoiselles Revisited? will be up at the gallery through Friday.”

I laughed out loud when I saw this picture. Click here to see Picasso‘s work for comparison.

9. Nothing a nice wall hanging wouldn’t fix. (6/27/07)

Yehudit Sasportas

Yehudit Sasportas’s The Guardians of the Threshold (2007)

Laughed out loud again. Rachel is funny. Wouldn’t you say?

10. My humps, my humps, my luscious lady lumps. (01/28/08)

Lisa Yuskavage

Lisa Yuskavage?s Wrist Corsage (1996)

Do think this is what they mean by “Yoga butt”??

11. Awwwkward (08/17/07)

Inspection

Erwin Wurm?s Inspection (2002?2003)

What do you say?

“Excuse me, I need to inspect your breasts.”

Maybe, “Are those things real?”

12. Painting without his glasses. (1/30/08)

BlueBlob by Bill

Bill Armstrong’s Untitled #1018 (2006)

Hey Bill, How about “Blue Blob by Bill”??

13. Bare Rug (10/27/07)

Nude with Afghani rug

Mariah Robertson?s Nude With Afghani Export Rug (2007)

When I first saw this, I thought, “nice ass”. Then I took a look at the rug. Art imitating life? Can you see the tanks, AK47s and helicopters?

You are so not a geek, ’cause you see, I can relate. I’m not a geek. Wait a minute. Maybe I am. Anyhoo, I connected with the butt shots. The guy – oooooh weeeee! And the female – kinda looks like mine. I got a nice bootie, you see. *giggling*

Love ya – happy TT :)

I am utterly grossed out about the epidermis pet! Ewww!

  4. Michelle
    March 5, 2008 | 6:10 pm

You and me both, Chelle! That’s truly repulsive. LOL on the Picasso m’amselle. Great images, and great TT. Thanks for the visit.

What a varied selection! I think I shall quickly pass over #2 and just say that I like #10 and #11 best.

  6. The Gal Herself
    March 5, 2008 | 6:24 pm

I liked #4. He seems so peaceful and satisfied with himself. I’d trade with him! Thanks for sharing, and thanks for visiting my TT.

Those are wild. And a bit on the grotesque side, but … they’re still neat to look at. If only there was an RSS feed for those, you know I’d be all over it!

    Marcia – Yes, odd.

Chuck – weelll, at least I’m in good company.

Chelle Y – Ew is right! Bleck!

Michelle – Yes, can you imagine what people make?? It’s all make by order.

Nicholas – I busted a gut on #9 – just because of the original – but yes, less forget all about 2 shall we?

That gal herself – Yes, well…. Unless he’s dead.

Susan Helen Gottfried – Check at Art Candy. There might be… who knows? The entire section is pretty hilarious given how serious people are about their celebrities.

The yoga just made me laugh! I do yoga at least 5-6 days a week….as much as I like my lady hump, it doesn’t look like that.

Cricket’s Hearth – You and me both!

Ivanhoe – Oh, I thought the title of #9 was hilarious…. at least you found something you like!

Joely – hmmm maybe I need to rethink.

Tommie – I interviewed a guy who was one of “the” yoga experts. He laughed with me off the tape about yoga butt. I have no idea really what that is.

Pussreboots – ahahaha. What did you SAY??

Lori – That’s funny because it’s what they say he does – paints without his glasses.

That tree picture really does look like the “after” picture after the bomb drops.

    Love the “wallhanging” tagline.

The skin things – absolutely not going there. Ewwwww!!!

    March 6, 2008 | 5:09 am

    March 6, 2008 | 5:59 am

Great pictures! My favorite is the first one. To me, it looks like a huge lost and found pile floating on a gym ceiling. I’d hang that in my house. Happy TT!

    March 6, 2008 | 6:27 am

I love this T13! Strangely, the photo ‘Gus Powell?s Putti’ is my favorite – I love how they’re lounging around, and yes, their confidence in their work. I also love the World’s Laziest Swimmer.

  37. Open Grove Claudia
    March 6, 2008 | 8:12 am

Kaige – Blue Blob by Bill? It’s strangely beautiful, isn’t it? I do love the color.

  40. Holly
    March 6, 2008 | 8:56 am

Okay – me too with being grossed out by the epidermis pet. Some I liked, some I didn’t. Don’t know why but my favorite is the one without glasses. It’s a blurry blob really – but I like it.

These were great! You’ve given me an idea though. Since I have no artistic ability, maybe I can just comment on the art I see from now on so I feel like I have something to do with the arts ;-)

The NY Times column is definitely something I’m going to check out!!

Jennifer McKenzie – Have you seen the original? This rendition is… modern? ;)

Zenmomma – You and me both… then my mind goes really unpleasant places….

    Beeker – Me too!

Michael C – I think what’s brilliant about Art Candy is that it’s not a professional artist – just someone with a bit of wit.

Laura – Yea! snow again! sneer…. Yes, epidermis pet is nasty.

Eve – Yes, indeed, the phrase “works of art” is fitting here.

Journeywoman – Yeah, too bad we can’t do that to the guys?

So if I get a tummy tuck or face lift, I should save the skin to make a little creature that I can carry in my purse? That one is too weird for words.

  53. greatfullivin

Synthectic skin??? Gross. Picasso could be an original its so, so , so Picasso-like.

Heart in SF – As usual, your mind leaps to the logical conclusions. I have a friend who keeps her keloids when they are removed. And shows them at parties. Ew.

Greatfullivin’ – It’s not synthetic skin. Pft – what are you thinking? It’s cell culture grown skin. (which is just that much more worse)

Babystepper – Yes or in the giggles.

CajunVegan – I bet you could so use your spring break about now!

Karen – Let’s hope your boys have more to look forward to than those being the “best days of their life”.
