In a recent post, I mentioned that dead people talk to me. A lot of people asked me about my experiences with dead people.
Thursday Thirteen #9 : My experiences with dead people.
Dead people are just like live people. In my experience, they don’t have missions. They rarely have unfinished business. Mostly, they want to tell their story and have their experience remembered. They want to matter.
Please know that I take all of this with a huge grain of salt. Who knows what’s real? These are just my experiences.
1. Lady on the stairs. (Background: We live in a house built in 1907 in a neighborhood that has seen good times and really bad times. The house was remodeled in 1983. An architect purchased the home from the estate of an elderly woman who lived alone in the house for decades.)
The first night we stayed in our current home, I got up to let Rose out in the early morning. Rose flew done the stairs and waited for me on the first floor.
Standing at the top of the stairs, I saw an elderly woman fall down the stairs, then lie on the landing. Her hip broken in the fall, she lay on the landing until she died. I saw this like watching a movie. The next night, standing again at the top of the stairs, I stood with my feet solid on the ground. Without warning, I felt as if the rug was literally yanked out from under my feet. I’ve never had that experience before or since. I flew into the air, down the stairs and landed where she fell. She told me she was there for three days before she died.
2. Guy who shot himself: (Background: We were looking for a house with a Realtor. She took us to this location.)
While D and the Realtor were upstairs, I wandered downstairs. Standing at the bottom of the stairs, I turned to my right into a galley room. Standing in the doorway, I saw an elderly man with a white beard dig through the cabinet in front of him. He turned to look at me, smiled slightly then raised an old handgun to his temple and pulled the trigger. The handgun looked like a war trophy or possibly an heirloom. The mess from the wound was incredible. I ran up the stairs and out of the house. Our Realtor contacted the owners to make discrete inquiries. She said they were very tight lipped about what happened to the last owner.
3. Hit and run motorcycle accident. (Background: I was driving up a street in Denver with a graphic artist who was helping us in the Open Grove. We passed a tree that had candles and flowers all around it. The graphic artist started crying and I asked her what was going on. She said that just the night before a young man was killed by a hit and run driver.)
I saw a young man standing next to a tree holding a motorcycle helmet. He watched the people come and drop off flowers or light a candle. When he realized I could see him, he said: “I didn’t know. I just didn’t know that life was over in an instant.” I saw him once more and he said the same thing. They never found the driver but the young man seems to have moved on.
4. Crooke Patterson Mansion (part 1): (Background: I officed in the Croke Patterson Mansion for almost two years. The mansion is considered to be one of the most haunted buildings in the Western United States. I did not know this when we moved in to start my fledgling psychotherapy business.)

The red dots on this picture are circles around orbs (i.e., spirits)
The story is that a doctor married a young woman. They moved into the house. One stormy night, the doctor was called away from the house and his pregnant wife. When he returned, she had killed herself and buried the baby in the mansion.
That’s the story. This is the story that the ghost on the second floor told me. She said that she was the child of the woman. She was five or six when her mother married the doctor and became pregnant. She was in the house when her mother went into labor. Her mother died in labor, as did the baby. She stayed with her mother for five days waiting for her mother to wake up. When the doctor returned, he took the child away from the house and they never returned. She returned after she died because she was certain her mother would come back to the mansion.
5. Lady in the bedroom: We lived in this house for a couple months, when one morning I woke up to find a woman standing over D. She was wearing a yellow dress and a hat circa 1900s. Rose, who sleeps next to me, growled and lunged for the woman. The woman had such a malicious look on her face, as if D. had done something to her, that I freaked out a little bit. I don’t really know what happened next, but a large yellow hole opened and sucked her into it. When she was gone, Rose lay back down and went to sleep.
6. Acupuncturist mother: I went to see a new acupuncturist. Laying on the table face up, I could see a female spirit flying around in the ceiling fan. I asked her if someone she knew had died lately. She started crying and said that her mother had died over the weekend. The mother didn’t say anything. She just laughed and played in the wind of the ceiling fan. I told the acupuncturist that her mother was happy and the acupuncturist seemed relieved.
7. Croke Patterson Mansion (part 2): I was frequently in the mansion by myself working on a Saturday or at night. One Saturday, I could hear voices talking to each other in the mansion. It was like a conversation you can hear but not quite make out the words. I went from room to room, office to office looking for the voices. I asked the girl spirit (of #4) on the second floor. She shook her head and looked frightened. I continued through the mansion until the voices led me to the basement. Finally, I heard the voices in a small closet in the basement. When I opened the door, the wall move back and forth. I don’t think Scooby Doo moved faster. I ran out of the basement and out of the mansion. We were told later by a psychic hired by a TV station that there were demons in the basement.
8. Waiting for her soldier: (Background: we were having trouble selling a duplex we owned. The duplex was built in 1942 and served as U.S. Air Force officer family housing during World War II.)
We decided to do a ghost space clearing at the duplex. When I sprayed salt water in a particular corner, Rose and the dog in-law (we were dog sitting) began to bark. A female came out of the wall. She said that she had moved to the duplex right after she married her Air Force husband. He left for Germany soon after. He told her that he would return to her. She stayed all this time because she was waiting for her husband to return.
9. Client’s sister: (Background: A client of mine’s sister died at a young age. I saw this client two days after her sister died.)
I met a client late one night. She was crying into her hands when I could see something moving around the room. I don’t exactly remember what happened next. But what I remember is that my client was able to have a conversation with her sister through me. When I (for lack of a better words) came to, my client was not crying and felt a great sense of peace. Her sister told her about a book or a journal which my client found when she got home. I felt blessed that I was able to help – even though I’m not exactly sure how.
10. Yoga in the basement: (Background: I participate in a Yoga Cooperative. We usually meet at Cheesman Park but since it’s been cold, we moved into the basement of a coffee shop for a couple weeks.)
At the end of our yoga session, the instructor began to lead people through a light stream visualization. You know the kind – light through the top of the head, etc. Anyway, as people opened themselves to the “light” I notice a group of spirits enter the basement room. They were pressing their faces against people’s faces. So rude. When I opened my eyes and saw a face in front of mine, I was pissed. As people calmed down, the spirits began to flit around the room – like birds or trapped wild animals – almost mocking the calm. We never went back to that coffee shop.
11. Dad’s Green Orb: (Background: My father had been ill for some time. My oldest sister had him moved to a nursing home. He died a little more than 24 hours after being moved to the nursing home.)
At 2:33 am on July 22, 2002, I opened my eyes from a sound sleep. I’m not sure what woke me. I just opened my eyes and saw a green orb. It was about four inches in diameter and floated above me. It lingered for a while then floated off. My little sister called at 2:45 am to say that my father died. I woke up every morning at 2:33 am for at least six months.
12. Croke Patterson Mansion (part 3): (Background: It’s Halloween and your office is in one of the most haunted buildings in the Western states. What would you do? We hosted a large Halloween party!)
In preparation for our Halloween party, we decided to hang pumpkin lights along the stairway to the basement. The stairway is dark and needed a little light. Every time I set the hammer down, it would move. When I say move, I mean it moved up and down the stairwell. While I never saw it move, I’d look for it at the top and find it at the bottom. I look for it at the bottom and find it at the top or in the middle. Creepy!
13. Ghost Hunting University and Murder Room: (Background: Two women were murdered in a hotel. Ghost Hunting classes are held at the hotel. The instructors say that they are helping the police resolve this cold case.)
We entered this room with what’s called a Thomas Edison Box (the equipment on the table in photo on the left). The box gives off white noise which the ghosts can use to create sound.
In a series of dramatic events, the teacher said that he would help these spirits “move on”. We as a class got together and he talked the spirits through this experience. He said that it worked, but who knows? He still runs classes at this hotel and says he talks to these disturbed spirits. My experience was the spirit stood right in front of me then turned to see a familiar spirit which took her out of the room.
I took these pictures with our camera. You can see the orb.

Thomas Edison box – and orb.

Can you see the face here?

………………creepy………..
Very entertaining! A huge grain of salt though!
Talk about creepy! I loved this. So you actually SEE dead people! WOW!
Wow. Creepy.
Goose-bumpy!
Interesting! You must be an inherently calm person to handle all this. I’d be in freak-out mode!
Geek Betty – Yes, very creepy.
Nicholas – Of course. Who knows? I’m not willing to place my bets on either side. It just keeps happening.
Shesawriter – I don’t like to because it scares me, but I have seen dead people. I do see orbs. I always have so….
Morgan – Yes, it is creepy.
Jay – Goose bumps? That’s cool.
Carolan Ivey – I don’t remember a time it didn’t happen, so I’m kind of used to it.
I just crapped my pants!
Nice Thursday! I have a good one up on mine! Check it out!
Well this is the most unique T13 I’ve ever read!
I’m inconfortable with that weird feeling I got in certain place, I cannot imagine what it can be for you!
But I guess it makes you improve your running skill!
Are you like a ghost whisperer? It seems that you have the privilege (or curse) of seeing those who have not yet “crossed over” so to speak. Do you feel that there is a reason why you are allowed to see what most of us mortals cannot? Although I have never personally experienced what you have I do not doubt you claims. Happy TT
ghosts and spirit creep me out and scare me.
I’ve told God many times not to ever do something like this to me….
My TT is up, 13 truths that have changed my life!!!! (you already saw it)
That is some cool stuff, Claudia!!! I was in a house once and I felt a presence. He seemed nice enough. So yeah, I believe this could be happening to you.
Happy TT!
Interesting stories! The most I’ve seen of the paranormal is seen a ghost cat who “lived” in our house, heard a ghost walk up stairs at a friend’s house, and seen a shadow person. The only thing that bothered me was the shadow person! Creeped the heck outta me!
Spooooooooooooooky!
I LOVE this post. So many mysteries. Who knows?
I’ve had a few weird experiences but not enough to do a TT.
Deb – Oh dear. Shall I pass you a wipe??
WFM – And that’s saying a lot! Cool.
Jill – Yes, I do run out of places fairly quickly leaving my husband to make excuses.
PJazzyPar – I would never presume to know the reason for my gifts. I try to help souls move on. That’s mostly what I do but that would be a whole other post. I also think I listen. Men frequently like this talent as well!
No Nonsense Girl – I get scared sometimes but it happens so much that I’m kind of used to it. I’m sure God will spare you.
Susan Helen Gottfried – At least he was nice. That’s all that really matters.
Lesley – I think that would creep me out too. I’d demand that the being show itself or be gone, but I’m bossy like that.
Secret Agent Mama – Yes indeed!
Susan J – I am with you. Who knows? It’s my experience but also filtered by my experience.
Pussreboots – Oooh you temptress. Do tell!
Claudia, this is one of the most interesting posts I have read in a long, long time. It’s amazing. You should write a book about your experiences.
I believe that everyone can experience this, but most of us have learned to tune it out. You have a special gift in that you haven’t tuned it out. It must be very disconcerting at times, though.
If I weren’t so tired I would give you a few of my stories. People don’t realize these things to happen.
The Pink Flamingo
I think that if ever a dead person talked to me, I’d join them! Yikes!
Thanks for visiting my TT and no, he probably will not get everything he asked for, but almost!
So, do you consider this gift a blessing or a curse? I may not handle it well like you do if it was me!
Oh, how fascinating! Especially since you were able to find out the histories–that they weren’t just random events.
I’m going to have to get that auto-link thingy.
The only experience we have had like this was a spooky hallway in one of the apartments we lived in. Both my husband and I thought the hall was spooky and we didn’t like going down it at night. Nothing ever happened, but when I finally said something about the “spooky hallway” my husband looked at me in shock and told me that he had felt the same thing!
I didn’t know you were a ghost whisperer. Interesting.
Ever take these souls to the place of rest? Show them where the place of sleep is? None of them mean you harm so there is really no need be scared of any of them, but the inhabiting the body thing well I do not let that happen anymore.
Find it funny though when they play tricks like moving the hammer, next time put it in your pocket as you work see what happens.
Interesting experiences
Peace
TWM
Interesting list! It would make a great ghost story.
Happy TT!
Fascinating the things you have encountered. I love when I meet someone who has had similar experiences to my own. It saddens me when people are scared or don’t believe in such things. I’m glad you do and are open to communicating with those left behind.
one time in college, we were driving down this dark road in backwoods georgia heading to spring break, just then we drove by a couple of fellow spring breakers, we saw a series of pairs of orbs. it was their butt cheeks, they were mooning us.
Very interesting. You lead a most interesting life. Happy T13!
Josie – I never thought of the experiences as different or interesting until you blogged on your experiences. See the influence you have!
SJ Reidhead – I’d love to hear your stories. Maybe you could post on them?
Chelle Y. – I think it’s shocking or startling when they appear. Otherwise, dead people are just like living people.
Grace – I’ve never thought of it as a blessing or a curse. It’s just something that “is” like having brown eyes or being tall.
Darla – Isn’t that fun? I try to find out if something happened. I think it helps me acknowledge the experience of the being so they can move on.
Tia – I’m sure there was something there. I also wouldn’t put up with it. I’d get out my spirit cleaning tools and clean up that hallway. No lurkers!
(Yes Master Linky is cool)
Tempest Knight – I don’t know if I am either. I think of ghost whisperers as able to call up ghosts to talk with them. I don’t know how to do that. If a ghost is around, I’ll listen but that’s about it.
TWM – I frequently encourage them to move on. In my experience, spirits miss their ques or are too frightened to move on. I try to get them to move on. I don’t take them to a place – more help them to do what is next.
Nicole Austin – I’ve never been able to fictionalize my life. Weird, eh? Characters and plots but never thinly disguised life. You are welcome to it though!
Christy – See! We have so much in common!
FuriousBall – You laugh. Some day I’ll take you ghost hunting. It’s fun stuff – and there’s lots in your neck of the woods. Of course, there are butt cheeks everywhere.
Adelle Laudan – I didn’t realize it was so interesting – it’s just life to me.
Wow….very interesting…..
Peace
Very entertaining.
Thanks for visiting my TT.
I LOVED this ! I can’t get enough of this stuff. Thanks for sharing your experiences!
Odat – Or something. To me, it’s just life.
Alasandra – Glad I could entertain!
Jill – I think your interest inspired the TT – thanks for that!
Have I just not been paying attention? I’ve never had any run-ins with dead folks. Hmmmm…
Thanks for stopping by!
This was by far the creepiest TT I have ever read… but in a good way. I may have to reread this (at night with all the lights out) at a later date.
That was very interesting! Sometimes I wish I could see those sorts of things, but in the end I figure I’m better off not.
Happy TT
I spent my honeymoon in what is supposed to be one of the most haunted hotels in America. I saw nothin’. Was very disappointed.
(The crescent hotel in Eureka Springs, Ar)
Loved your 13 as always!
Yikes. Some of these stories actually gave me chills.
Not the same kind of chills that I got from you using “office” as a verb, but still…
as always, a fascinating tt from a fascinating lady. thank you for sharing more stories with us!!
Carrie Lofty – I think everyone has experiences. They just don’t notice them on a conscious level. You also didn’t rent an office in an extraodinarily haunted building.
Malcolm – You say the sweetest things!
Frigga – The problem is that once you see them, you can’t not see them. So it’s fun for a day, then you have to figure out what’s next.
Samantha K – Yikes. I would not do well in that hotel. Maybe it cursed the marriage? Just a thought?
Fabbie – Native California – we have the right to make up language or use is anyway we want. Then we put it on television and it gets put in the dictionary.
She – Thanks for asking for more stories!
Oh Claudia, you’ve given me the shivers! What a great TT. Thank you for sharing all these experiences!
interesting list!!
happy tt!

Not so much salt here. I believe that spirits are among us all the time, trying in many ways to interact with us, probably to tell their stories.
After my mother died suddenly, I was awakened at the exact same time in the early morning hours for months afterward, and I realized that she must have died at that time. Since she was alone, it was never precisely determined.
A psychic friend had told me 7 months before that my mother would die when she did and that I would receive a phone call from her afterward.
After her funeral, I was talking with my daughter and my niece at my brother’s house when the phone rang. My niece answered it, looked puzzled and hung up. It immediately rang again and she asked me to pick up the phone.
There was a sound on the line which I can only describe as the sound of eternity. It was unlike anything I had ever heard. All three of us knew that my mother had gotten where she was going and wanted us to know she was all right.
G’day from Australia,
I really savored this post. About six weeks ago, I asked if any of my blog readers had ghostly experiences – and got great responses.
This would have been perfect for the theme.
I’m a journalist and author like you.
Geeez, just reading all this was freaking me out, especially the one with the old man and the old handgun.
That’d be too much for me Claudia….
I’ve never had any kind of contact with the supernatural
Check the orbs out in this picture I took at home: http://www.flickr.com/photos/fondofelves/1342265580/
What do you think?
Wow, that is fascinating. Really. Although the being pushed down the stairs part? Not cool. I think its amazing that you are that open.
Happy TT too.
Holy Crap!!! I got chills reading that. You are so brave! I have frequently sensed someone in our bedroom and have heard the door open and shut. My girls come in a lot so I thought it was them. When I sat up to comfort them, no one was there. It freaks me out.
All I can say is Wow. Wow and thanks for stopping by my T13
That’s a lot of experiences. It’s said my kids school is “haunted” but they don’t like to talk about it because it could scare the children.
scary!
Wow, Claudia! You’re making me think of “What the Bleep Do We Know?” with this post. I believe there is so much beyond this dimension we have dubbed ‘reality’ that to be closed to the possibilities is to be closed to the richness of existence.
Your experiences are fascinating and I agree with the person who suggested you write a book about them.
Happy TT!! Thanks for the link on the banner… it’s just the right one for your topic.
I am utterly and completely freaked out right now!!! Our duplex looks new, but it’s really old housing that was moved here and renovated…who knows what happened here. Eek!!!
Come visit my Thursday Thirteen if you get a chance.
Amy Palko – I thought everyone had these experiences – guess not!
Amanda – Glad to peak your interest!
Heart in SF – How cool to know that she is well and safe. I’m delighted you were able to know that!
David McMahon – Very cool. I will definitely check it out!
Slick – I told you that story before! Sheez! I bet you have but you just don’t really know it. Especially living where you do – there’s a lot that goes on there.
Janet – Send me the photo and I’ll take a look. I tried to get it from Flicker but it didn’t work.
Vixen – Yeah, that wasn’t fun. But the odd thing was that it wasn’t a push, but a sense of the carpet pull out from under me. Gratefully, she’s moved on.
Believer in Balance – Sounds like someone came to visit. I guess I just think that dead people are just people. Not very scary but needy none the less. Someone probably needed your comfort.
Dane Bramage – Wow good or wow bad?
Mom not Mum – I wonder why they don’t either make terms with the ghost or get rid of it. Both are pretty easy to do. (shaking head) people….
JO – Sorry to scare you!
Harlekwin – Oh I agree. There’s so much we don’t know. You’d be surprised how much I say that! Reality is – a concept at best! I love your banners! Thanks for letting use them.
Natalie – Oh dear, sorry for freaking you out! Shoot me an email and we’ll do some ghost hunting.
All this ghost stuff… it’s kinda weird to me.
Advice: Really double-check the orb thing…
Gosh, these really gave me chills. I have had some similar experiences and they have really scared me. I’ll have to read up on that mansion. Sounds terrifying!
The truth is out there. Thanks for sharing — enthralling topic.
I have been lurking and am really enjoying your blog.
Stop by my Coulda Woulda Shoulda NaBloPoMo edition and vote for my next entry.
Ieeek, that sounds so scary to me, but you seem to get “used” to it in a way
Thanks for stopping by at my TT!
Greets Julia
Wow, that is seriously cool. I think I’d be a bit freaked out by it, but you seem to handle it really well. And I love the story about the mom playing in the fan!!
Matthew James Didier – Yes the orbs are quite controversial. Luckily, I am a trained ghost hunger and can discern the difference. Thanks for the heads up.
Los Angelista – We were complete morons to office there. Really. I’d love to hear about your experiences!
Canjun Vegan – I’m glad you commented. I always like to hear from people. I do, however, believe the truth is inside – not out there. It’s my personal bitch about Mulder. If he just took a moment to know his own truth everyone he loved wouldn’t have died. But that’s me.
Julia – Sometimes it feels like it. D. always says, “don’t listen” but I’m too nosey…. curiousity and all.
Claudia – I have a lot of practice with this stuff. Again, I thought everyone had these experiences.
Wow, wow, wow. I have had experiences that made me feel I was on the verge of seeing something but I DON’T WANT TO. You are very brave. I hope you’ll share more of the stories. What was it Edith Wharton called it? “The fun of the shiver.”
I read this at night. In the dark. And I was skeered!!
Damozel – Well, at least you know what you want! Good for you!
Colleen – Oh, sorry! Do you feel better now?
I am creeped out. I guess I am a skeptic (one of the few). Very interesting to read. Thanks.
You are special indeed. They choose you. I’ve seen a couple of things, but nothing like you. You’re like the little boy from The 6th sense. You see dead people.
When I was a kid, I was in bed when I saw a whole bunch of people just milling around. I wanted to call out for my mom, but didn’t want to call attention to myself.
Since I work graveyard, the hallways are always empty, and at the end of the hallway I saw something white turn the corner. It felt familiar. When I returned to my desk, I got the call about my Grandmother being minutes from passing. I knew it was her, I think she was making sure we were all okay before passing on. I never look at that hallway the same.
Those are the two most memorable experiences. It’s fun to share these.
Greatfullivin’ – I think it’s good to be skeptical. I also think there’s more to life than what we can define and/or quantify. I wonder how much I miss in my skepticism.
Nila – Great stories. I’m sure you saw your grandmother. She loved you so much.
