Obese? What’s your sleep like?
We’ve talked about it (most recently here). Sleep deprivation leads to metabolic changes which result in obesity. The data is in for sleep deprivation in children - it leads to obesity. “Writing in the journal Archives of Disease in Childhood, (Shahad) Taheri said there was increasing evidence that shortened sleeping times result in metabolic changes that may contribute to obesity, insulin resistance, diabetes and heart disease.”
And it’s not just children who pack on the pounds when they don’t sleep. This study, shows that middle aged women who sleep 5 hours or less run the risk of gaining 33 pounds. 33 pounds! That’s enough to push you into the obese zone.
We need to reevaluate our push-push busy life style. Our priorities focus on doing more, learning more, which means that we sleep less. Our busy lifestyle is literally killing us - and our children.
