Walking the mid-line
Everyone knows that I don’t like war. It’s not a big secret. I don’t like it, never have. It was a bone of contention between my father and I for most of his life. I don’t like war… any war… all the wars currently going on in the world… and I don’t think that’s going to change about me.
My country is at war in another country. I don’t know if it’s right or wrong - I could probably argue both sides. You’ll be surprised to find out that I don’t like it much. I don’t like that my country is at war.
As a child, I could look away. As an adult, I must look with open eyes at the good, the bad and the ugly of it all. I have been reading soldier’s blogs - the good, the bad and the ugly. (There’s a great list on the One Veteran’s Voice blog)
Slate put together a “sandbox” for soldiers. This allows a soldier to post a blog without risking his or her life or position. Whatever you think about this particular war, it’s worth taking the time to look boldly into the face of your countrymen and find their humanity. This was my favorie: The Search.
I encourage you today to take a look at these blogs if only to see your own humanity reflected back.
