A reason to eat a Big Mac
“So my blood pressure is 122/60 but I feel like crap,” I say.
“Well that’s not good,” the doctor says. “You probably lost too much salt. How long have you felt like this?”
“Off and on since we started the new blood pressure medicine - you know the diuretic/potassium enhancer?” I say. “I had heat exhaustion during this time…. I don’t know if it’s because it’s so hot or the diuretic…”
“Um,” he says looking at his notes, “I don’t really know what I was thinking when I prescribed that for you…. It’s really not the right thing for someone who is young and active.”
I say nothing fearing that I might pick something up and hit him over the head with it. I remind myself that I actually like this guy. He speaks fluent Hindi. (What?) He took Biochemistry from the same geeks that were my professors. Breathe in. Breathe out.
“Well,” he says shrugging. “Let’s just change it. In the meantime, just eat some salty food for a couple of days. You’ll feel better soon.”
Drawing on 5 years of conversations with nationally recognized experts in nutrition and a bachelor’s degree in Biochemisty, I contemplate, “what single food has the highest salt content?”
