Moby on Misogyny

Celebrity is a funny thing. Famous people generally grab our attention. Certainly, there are a number of celebrities who bring that attention to issues of importance. It’s rare, however, for a celebrity to bring attention to something that happens in “regular” life to “normal” people in their own city, country and state. Therefore, it’s worth giving some attention to someone who is using their position to speak about real life.

On December 6, 2005, Moby writes about Misogyny in: I’d like to write about misogyny.

The research is very clear. People who watch violence on television tend to have violent thoughts and act out in violence. Children who play violent video games tend to resolve their conflicts with violence. And violent music leads to violent acts. There is no controversy regarding the impact of violent images, sounds and sites.

Why are people allowed to spread their violence everywhere? And why do we watch?

Moby might be frustrated with artists who spread violent images and themes in their music, yet people watch. We watch violent television, violent news, listen to violent music and participate in “national pass times” (read: football) which consist of violent sports. If people didn’t watch MTV, football, video games like Hero, they wouldn’t exist.

How do we create some filters for our own violent appetites?

Just food for thought….
