Marriage?
We are working on a fall course about how to get along with your family, so you’ll have to pardon two days in a row about marriage.
This site - wife.org - represents the modern conundrum about marriage. Here, on a site called “wife.org”, there are a number of prominent articles about divorce. Doesn’t that seem odd? I would think that “exwife.org” (which isn’t a website) would hold the articles on divorce and “wife.org” would help people stay married.
In modern times, the reality is that there are few resources, outside of the crazy wackos who are located in Colorado Springs, helping people stay married. If you don’t buy the crazy we’re-right-and-you’re-not line, then where do you go when your marriage is in trouble?
Sure you can go to a therapist. Yet, most therapists say that couples come to see them after they have already decided to divorce. You can talk to your friends. However most women and men are encouraged to divorce over staying together. If you don’t believe me, ask anyone who has been divorced. They will tell you that most of their friends actually supported the divorce over encouraging them to work it out.
Haville Hendrix and Helen La Kelly Hunt told me once that Americans have lost the capacity to have relationships. They spoke of wanting to teach relationship skills in elementary school. They believe that a committed relationship is the primary way that human being heal their childhood wounds and grow. If we lose the capacity to have these relationships, where are we?
