Finally, the experts notice the American family
You have heard it in the Open Grove over and over again. The American family no longer consists of a husband, wife and 2.5 children. In fact, fewer than 25 % of American households look like that. This exists for a number of reasons.(Check out this article.) The question I have is “why is this is such a surprise?”
I mean really. By the time most children reach 4th grade their parents are divorced. If you don’t believe me, ask any 4th grade teacher. Married parents are the exception, not the rule.
The world has changed. The question is not “how do we put everything back the way we fantasize it was in the 1950s?” but rather “how do we support people in their current configuration?” What support does single parent’s need? What support do children need? If gay couple’s are so common what’s all the fuss about gay people getting married?
It’s time to embrace this change. We need to go of our fantasies about what “should” exist and embrace the world as it is. It’s time to ask good questions about what actually is rather than holding on to what we want things to be.
We’ll try to keep doing that here.
