Car Seats and injury
Have you heard about this controversy? Economists Steven Levitt and Stephen Dubner ran the numbers. It turns out that children do not receive greater protection from car seats then from the adult seat belt. In many states it is a crime to not have your child in a car seat.
Recently on their Freakonomics blog, someone wrote in about a study given to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) proving that car seats were not more effective. NHTSA’s response: “NHTSA felt that the manufacturers would be ‘upset’ by the conclusions.” Once again, it’s profit over function as the American government creates laws to support the car seat manufacturers despite the fact that there is no proof that they work!
Read about it in the Freakonomics blog or the book, Freakonomics.
Of course my favorite piece on this blog is why people who are drinking tend not to be injured in car accidents. Why? They tend to hit people instead of people hitting them.
