Status?
I have this friend that is very status conscious. As the ultimate middle child, I am amused by his competitive nature and feel slightly superior for my lack of interest in competition. Thus, I gain status, in my own mind, from my lack of caring about status. (If you are not a middle child, you might not get this.) Anyway, he thinks that I am the head of a small non-profit. Even though he has been to our events, talked with the people involved in the Open Grove, he doesn’t really seem to know what it is that we do.
Until Saturday night…..
A group of us were driving home from seeing Hitchhiker’s Guide. The conversation moved to talking about books that should be made into movies. Someone suggested The Way of the Peaceful Warrior. Thinking that everyone knew that Dan Millman had visited the Open Grove while he was in Denver, I said, “They are making the movie right now. Dan brought the stills with him when I saw him last week.”
Well, my status conscious friend’s head swung around. The immediate questions, “how do you know Dan Millman?” and on and on as he reassessed my status.
I thought, “I am so cool because I don’t care about status like he does”.
And then I laughed at myself.
