Insulin Resistance Syndrome?

It sounds like the powers that be have finally determined a name - Insulin Resistance Syndrome - instead of Syndrome X or Metabolic Syndrome. There is an excellent article in Prevention magazine this month which uncovers the symptoms, how this syndrome is created and what you can do to stop it. (Here’s the link to the on-line article: “The New Silent Killer”

It turns out that I am ripe for this syndrome. I don’t sleep a lot, never have. I have a stressful job. I have a family history of high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes. (Most of my family looks like Mrs. Sees on the candy box. In fact, our family ate so much See’s candies that I thought she was a member of our family when I was a child!) I am overweight. Diagnosed with high blood pressure and I just turned 40 years old. While I don’t have a very sedentary lifestyle, I am pretty slow in the winter.

I have put myself on a sleep diet where I am working to sleep an additional hour a night. It’s hard because I don’t particularly like sleeping. But it’s better than diabetes - right? I am also working to get more aerobic exercise. My goal is to be on top of this by the end of 2004.
