Update

I have received a few emails and calls making sure that I am OK because I haven’t posted here. Thank you for all your concern, prayers, emails and calls! I wanted people to know that we are working on changing the format of these posts to a WebLog or (Blog), so I haven’t been updating. Sorry for any and all worry!

Of course, I also went completely off track last week. My birthday came and went and I wanted cake and bread and pasta and everything else I am not supposed to eat. I mean it was my birthday! Shouldn’t I have what I want?? Of course, I felt gross and a little sick, but hey I had cheesecake! Ok, I haven’t had cheesecake for, uh, 15 years(!), but I still deserved it. Didn’t I?

Denial isn’t just a river in Egypt.

I just ran out of steam and started feeling sorry for myself. I mean, will I never be able to eat break again! I can really see why Joe Montana would prefer to just take the medication rather than change his diet!

I also took a look at the South Beach Diet and it’s too meaty for me. I don’t eat meat and cheese, so I am back to the Dash Plus diet as proposed in the Healthy Heart Miracle.

Monday, my bp was back to 147/92… bummer.

I have enlisted a friend to help with the motivation factor. We are going to be buddies in the plan. I also decided that I would feel much more sorry for myself if I had diabetes….. Right?

Maybe dieting is really like meditation. It’s an on and off experience instead of 100% on and 100% off.

I know, I know, it’s a process!

Interesting journey. You are right: every health professional will view things a little differently. It is a n awful burden to those of us who choose to participate in our lives (versus take what we are given).
Hang in there. I’ve been taking BP meds for acouple years now and my numbers are consistently down. HCTZ and a fancy one, Atacand, an angiotensin blocker. And I disagree abit that the meds treat only the symptoms. Indeed it is trendy to say the our hectic lifestyles and crappy diets are causing our hypertension epidemic. But the truth is this: some folks just got it. And, if they don’t get rid of it, it’ll get rid of them.
Life ia bit too short to spend a lot of time searching for the magic combo to lower your BP. My feeling is: Take the meds and stop the damage.

Thanks Keith, that is very well said. It’s important for each person to come to their own conclusion about their heart health. There are truly no right answers here. Only what works for you, your lifestyle and your body.

Thank you for writing and sharing your own experience! It’s really important that we continue to talk about this issue as millions (estimated 50 million) of Americans have untreated hypertension.

Many blessings!
